CitySound PDX

Fostering Community through Noise

Portland is a noisy city, and as a musician, I love noise. Bustling streets and music in the park are what gives every city its own unique soundscape. But local policies can affect how soundscapes grow and change with the city it lives in.

CitySound PDX explores how the music community might safely practice and share their craft in this noisy little-big city we call home.

“Music is not a nuisance.
Music is not a crime.
So why is it policed?”

What space does music occupy in Portland?

In February 2023 I presented project City Sound PDX at the monthly meeting for local nonprofit, MusicPortland to an audience of music professionals, educators and advocates. I was joined on a panel of industry and policy professionals to answer:

What is music’s place under current Portland noise policy?

CitySound PDX teamed up with Portland DIY’s own GloomhousePDX to bring an all-ages night of music to Stelo Gallery.

Project Legacy

After months of research, 998 survey responses, a redesigned system for Noise Variance applications, and one hell of a gallery show and concert, I’m working to further advocate for music’s rightful place as an essential resource for culture sharing as part of MusicPortland’s Music Policy Council, and on the Noise Review Board’s 2023 Workplan for Title 18 Reform.

Project CitySound PDX received the PNCA MFA Thesis Award for Collaborative Design in May 2023.
